There is a lot to learn, and even once you get it, you have to keep up applying it.

It’s more go to the gym then run on a treadmill. A treadmill gets harder the more faster you run, but the benefit doesn’t increase in proportion to the effort required although burnout can come wuicker. But there are other ways of generating fitness (traffic), such as those other machines in the gym (social media, spread the word to friends, twitter, commenting on other blogs); You don’t have to stick to the treadmill of continuous keyword dropping. Likewise don’t completely give it up or you’ll get fat and drop down the SERPS

About 50% of the traffic to that site comes through other means, so it’s not that big a deal. Still, a little disheartening to see it drop so quickly, especially since I think the sites above me offer so little.

Not sure it’s a treadmill but there is no doubt in my mind that if you create your own product or service it will save you having to go down that route. If you don’t enjoy SEO, yeah don’t go down the path of chasing rank.
